Once you have outdoor lighting installed, you want to continue to get the full value out of your set-up for years to come. But just like other aspects of your home, you’ll need to take care of those lights to ensure they continue to function as they should.
A little bit of proactive outdoor lighting maintenance can go a really long way in protecting your investment in landscape lights.
But what exactly is involved with lighting maintenance? Here are a few important things that you need to know in order to get the most out of your lights.
An important aspect of lighting maintenance is a thorough inspection. Since lighting fixtures are outside, it’s not uncommon for them to get bumped out of place or moved over time.
When your landscaping company is there tending to your plants or mowing the lawn, they might accidentally bump a fixture. Or, maybe your kids were just playing soccer in the lawn and a fixture got hit by the ball.
These sorts of alignment issues can happen quite easily but can be corrected at the time of a routine inspection.
Oftentimes people don’t realize how important perfect alignment is in ensuring their outdoor lighting continues to function the way that they desire. We’ve said before that a great outdoor lighting design is thoughtful and artistic, ensuring that everything is illuminated exactly as planned.
This is why you want to keep everything in alignment. It’s a matter of keeping your design intact.
In addition to checking for anything out of place, lighting maintenance should also include an inspection of wires and connections to make sure they’re working properly. Sometimes wires can become unearthed, so maintenance should also include reburying anything that might have worked its way up.
Insects and debris can sometimes end up in the lights, so some cleaning up is also part of this check-up.
In general, the idea is to seek out and fix problems. That even includes changing settings to accommodate daylight savings time. When ongoing lighting maintenance is performed you gain peace of mind that everything is going to continue to function as it should.
If there is more substantial repair work that needs to be done because a fixture isn’t working properly or something was broken (perhaps by a mower), those repairs will also be addressed.
A final point of consideration is that the more complex your lighting system, the more often you should have landscape lighting maintenance performed.
At a minimum, our Lighting Maintenance Program involves coming out twice a year.
However, we have clients that we come out as often as monthly for. If you have hundreds of fixtures and lights throughout the front and back of your house, there is much to be inspected.
You want to ensure that everything continues to work its best. If you have a complex system, you may want to at least consider quarterly visits.
The goal of landscape lighting maintenance is to keep your outdoor lighting looking and performing as it did on the day it was installed. You want it to stay this way for years to come.
With ongoing outdoor lighting maintenance, you can gain peace of mind that any potential problems will be sought-out and fixed before they can cause major issues with your lighting design.
This is why we call lighting maintenance a “protection of your investment.” You’ll help ensure that you get the most possible enjoyment and functionality out of your lighting now and into the future.
