There are so many ways that residential landscape lighting can improve a home. And it’s never just one area of the property that can benefit. It’s the entire property as a whole.
That’s why it’s not uncommon for one project to lead to another.
That was certainly the case at this Memphis residence, which had an outdated system with some ongoing issues. We started with one upgrade that led to eventually renovating the lighting on their entire property.
As many projects do, this particular project started with a problem/frustration that the homeowners were having. They had an older lighting system which frequently needed bulbs changed out.
But more immediately frustrating was the fact that delivery people were repeatedly running over the fixtures. The lighting fixtures next to the driveway were frequently being hit and needed to be replaced.
They were wasting time and money with this system.
Fortunately, we had solutions. The immediate problem to fix was getting rid of those fixtures next to the driveway. We were able to give them ample lighting but recessed that lighting into the concrete so that it could not be damaged when the delivery trucks drove over.
After fixing that immediate concern, they asked us to take a look at the property and make recommendations.
We provided suggestions and estimates, and the homeowners were excited to get the lighting renovation underway.
Without the right outdoor lighting, even the most beautiful homes can be lackluster in the evening hours. This was a gorgeous home and property but it was in need of a lighting overhaul.
There were many improvements that we suggested.
For instance, the property had some attractive mature trees that could substantially benefit from being lit. Trees are one of the key features to consider lighting on a property. They can benefit from techniques like uplighting in a way that creates a very dramatic look in the canopy.
This home was also located on a dark road, and in order to boost curb appeal, it was imperative that you be able to see the home itself. The home sits on a three-acre property that is about an acre back from the main road, so it was truly hidden in the dark.
With the right architectural and landscape lighting, we were able to light up the home and its landscape in a way that could be seen from the road. This not only impacted curb appeal in a positive way but also made the home more inviting and welcoming to the homeowners and their guests
When we’re looking at a property, we’re looking at it with an eye for design with aesthetics at the forefront of our thinking. That means that we’re not only looking at what’s already there…but what could be there to make it better.
We know that many homeowners find it valuable when we make recommendations and suggestions for ideas they might not have considered.
That was certainly the case in this project.
We recognized that when everything was lit up, there was a dark hole in the front yard. That’s because there simply wasn’t anything there to light up.
We made the recommendation to plant some new dogwood trees that we could add light to and beautifully fill that hole. Once those trees were installed and lit up, it really allowed the entire lighting design to look continuous, rather than have a big hole where there was nothing but dark space.
This is a great example of how we’re always looking at the big picture and not just lighting up what’s already there, but making recommendations when there might be an opportunity for improvement.
This particular project is a great example of how we can phase work if homeowners don’t want to jump in and do everything all at once. Since this did turn into a massive project spanning the entire front and backyard, the homeowners spread the work out in phases over time.
The project might have started in the front yard (first in solving the landscape lighting issue and delivery drivers hitting the lights), then moved into architectural lighting for the home.
But it ultimately led us to the backyard, where the homeowners were also interested in lighting up their property.
Backyard lighting is about increased functionality, enjoyment, and beauty.
To showcase the beauty of the backyard, we lit up trees and water fountains, allowing these homeowners to enjoy these beautiful elements of their property in the evening hours. But we also lit up walkways to make the property accessible and functional.
Over time, this project really did grow and what started out as solving a simple problem has become a gorgeously-lit and highly functional property with just under 500 fixtures installed to date!
Since this is a family who is always looking to consider ways that they can add value and enjoyment to their home, we look forward to working with them on future improvements as well.
